Thangool, Queensland

If you’ve blinked and missed Thangool, first of all — blink slower. Second, turn around and head back, because this little gem in Central Queensland is worth more than just a fuel stop.

Thangool Apex Memorial Park Campground:

FREE for 72 hours (which is at least 71 more hours than you were planning to stay — but trust us, you’ll want to). And, it’s dog friendly!

The Thangool Apex Memorial Park offers:

🚽 Toilets

🚿 Water available

🔌 No power

🔥 BBQs

🗑️ Rubbish bins

🏕️ Picnic shelters

📱 Telstra reception

All this… for FREE. For 72 glorious hours. That’s longer than most celebrity marriages.

The campground is walking distance — yes, actual walking, like with your legs — to some of Thangool’s best offerings:

🍻 Two pubs – The Red Steer Hotel and Hotel Thangool. Double the chances of scoring a decent parmi. Hotel Thangool is dog-friendly in the beer garden, so that’s a bonus.

Service station – Fuel up your rig and grab that suspiciously old meat pie you’ll still absolutely eat.

💇‍♀️ Hairdresser – Because nothing says “outback chic” like a spontaneous trim.

🚙 Hit the Road for a Day Trip

You’re smack bang in Banana Shire, so go exploring! Biloela is just down the road for more shops, history museums, and actual bananas (maybe).

Check out the nearby Mount Scoria Conservation Park, known for its famous ‘singing rocks’. It’s an extinct volcano featuring large basalt columns. Legend has it that if the columns are hit with a metal object, they produce musical notes. Unfortunately, the track is closed and climbing is not recommended.

Final Thoughts

Thangool might not be on every tourist map, but that’s half the charm. It’s peaceful, it’s friendly, and it’s got free camping with real toilets. What more do you need? (Don’t say Wi-Fi.)

So roll in, set up, and stay a while. You’ve got 72 hours. Make them count.

Ciao for now!
