Surat, Queensland

Where the River Flows, the History Glows, and the Prickles Bite

G’day happy campers! If you’re heading through Queensland’s southwest and looking for a cracking spot to pull up stumps, let us introduce you to the lovely little river town of Surat—a place with more charm than a swag of koalas.

Situated about 80km south of Roma, Surat is nestled on the banks of the Balonne River and delivers big on country hospitality, small-town history, and the occasional rogue prickle.

Let’s talk camping first…

Fisherman’s Camp – A Freebie Worth Catching

Righto, if you’re tight with your dollars or just love the word “free” (don’t we all?), Fisherman’s Camp is the place to be. It’s located on the Roma side of the river, just outside of town, and while it’s not exactly the Ritz, it does offer:

Public toilets (with enough privacy to sing your favourite shower song)

Picnic tables (for your gourmet baked bean experience)

BBQ facilities (because sausages always taste better in the bush)

But don’t rock up expecting bubble baths and spa robes—there are no showers, so you’ll need to BYO bathing system. That could mean a camp shower, a wet wipe deluxe experience, or a quick dip in the river if you’re feeling brave (and don’t mind sharing the water with curious turtles).

The camp is dog-friendly, so your four-legged travel buddy is welcome too.

Stay limit: 48 hours

Vehicle friendly: Motorhomes, caravans, tents—everyone’s welcome

Access: Easy peasy. Spacious, flat, and right off the main road—no off-roading or GPS tantrums required.

We Stayed Across the Road…

We actually stayed at a private campground opposite Fisherman’s Camp. It was serene, peaceful, and absolutely crawling with prickles—like Mother Nature had been sprinkling thumbtacks around for fun. Tonka was NOT amused and had to wear his prickle boots 24/7. He was less than impressed and looked like a cowboy, walked like a tap dancer.

Things to Do in Surat – Yes, There’s More Than Just Fishing

Once you’ve had your fill of riverside chilling, there’s plenty in town to keep you entertained, educated, and fed:

Cobb & Co Changing Station Museum

Where the wild outback meets old-school transport—think horses, coaches, and everything you never knew you needed to know about mail delivery.

Balonne River Walk

Stretch your legs, walk off the pies, and enjoy some scenic river views without dodging road trains.

Surat Art Gallery

Culture, colour, and a surprising amount of talent for a town this size.

Riverside Parklands & War Memorial

Great spots for a picnic, reflection, and a chance to appreciate the local history.

Historic Buildings

If you love old architecture, heritage vibes, and buildings that have stood the test of time (and probably cyclones), you’ll love Surat’s main street.

Final Thoughts from the Road

Surat’s one of those places that sneaks up on you—in a good way. It’s quiet, it’s quirky, and it offers free camping, good coffee, and just enough history to make you feel smarter after a visit.

Whether you’re just passing through or staying for the full 48 hours, you’ll leave with a full memory card, a prickle in your sock, and probably a plan to come back again.

Ciao for now!
