Roma, Queensland
Big Town, Bigger Surprises, and the Biggest Boab You’ve Ever Seen
Ah, Roma. Not the Italian kind with pizza and gladiators – the Queensland kind, with oil rigs, giant trees, and enough country charm to make your motorhome blush.
Where We Stayed: Ups & Downs Farm Stay
For just $25 a night with power, it’s a bargain, especially when you realise they also have:
• Water
• A dump point (never gets old, does it?)
• Alpacas and goats (who doesn’t love farm animals?)
The access road is dirt and has some “exfoliation”, so take it slow unless you want to bounce your fridge into next week.
Most sites will need a bit of levelling, so bring your ramps and levelling blocks.
Things to See in Roma
1. The Big Rig
Not a truck stop burrito, but an actual oil and gas museum. It’s got history, machinery, and enough interpretive signage to qualify as a walking workout. Check out the night show if you’re into explosions and educational drama. We didn’t get to go in because we have Tonka, but from what we’ve read, it’s worth checking out.
2. The Largest Boab Tree in Roma
We’re not saying it’s the biggest Boab ever, but it’s definitely trying its best. It’s like Mother Nature went, “Yes, this one. Make it a chonk.” Good for shade, selfies, and moments of botanical awe.
3. Roma Bush Gardens
It’s like a garden, but tougher. Native plants, winding paths around a dam, and if you’re lucky, a lizard that stares into your soul. Great spot to stretch your legs and pretend you’re on Gardening Australia.
4. Sculptures Out Back
Roma’s annual outdoor sculpture exhibition blew us away with the creativity of its artists. Who knew you could make something so intriguingly beautiful from scrap metal and a few nuts and bolts. The imagination of the artists had us in awe of their talent. This is really worth seeing.
Final Thoughts
Roma surprised us. It’s got a big rig, a big tree, and enough big sky to make your drone footage look like a tourism ad. Whether you’re chasing grey nomad glory or just looking for a powered site with some peace, Roma’s got you covered.
Would we stay again? Absolutely. As long as we’ve got our levelling blocks, we're golden.
Ciao for now, legends.
