Leyburn, Queensland
195 kilometres south-west of Brisbane and 66 kilometres from Toowoomba, lies the small town of Leyburn in the Southern Downs & Granite Belt region of Queensland. What an absolute gem of a place it is!
The town provides a free camping area at Leyburn Sports Ground with two automated talking showers, a toilet and a dump point. For those driving a low clearance motorhome like ours, access is a breeze. The pet-friendly camp ground is straight off the bitumen with a flat, well graded dirt road encircling the area. It is enormous, with plenty of space to stretch out between campers. Within walking distance, is a general store and pub and your fur baby is also welcome in the beer garden. Being off grid here doesn’t mean you have to be disconnected, as there is good internet reception available. The maximum stay here is 72 hours which is ample time to check out the nearby attractions.
While in Leyburn, you can don some walking boots (or drive if you prefer) and follow the Leyburn Heritage Trail. The trail is 10 km long, takes about 3-4 hours to complete and takes you past some interesting places of historical significance including old buildings, pioneering destinations and WW2 wartime fields. Once a year, Leyburn comes to life as it celebrates the running of the very first Grand Prix in Australia. The Leyburn Sprints is run in August each year and thousands of visitors descend on the town for a weekend of fun and motorsport around the town. Definitely something to experience for lovers of old motorsport cars.
We really enjoyed our time in Leyburn and we didn’t get to see everything, so we’ll be back!
